The essentials

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • LANGUAGE

English and Te Reo Maori are the official spoken languages of New Zealand. The kiwi accent is pretty unique, but it won’t be long til you know your ‘yeah nah’s’ from your ‘nah yeah’s’.

  • CURRENCY

The currency of New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$). Whilst New Zealand is often considered an expensive destination, US Dollar, British Pounds and the Euro will go far when exchanged for NZ$.

  • PLUG IN

New Zealand uses plug type ‘I’, which has two angled flat pins & an optional single straight flat pin. It’s the same type that is used in Australia. Voltage is 230/240v so bring a converter for 110v devices.

  • CONNECT

Mobiles have good 4G coverage in the cities, but out of town the service can be unreliable. Wifi is easy to find in hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and airports, however speeds are average.

  • LOCAL ICONS

New Zealand is known for Maori culture, deserted beaches, snow capped mountains, the All Blacks, glaciers, delicious wine and fresh seafood. Where else can you surf and snowboard in the same day?

  • WHEN TO VISIT

The Southern Hemisphere summer is peak season (Dec-Feb) in New Zealand. Come in Winter (Jul-Sep) for skiing and Autumn (Mar-Apr) is the best season for hiking with settled weather and less crowds.
